A Good Example
"And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ." 1 Corinthians 11:1
"And so if anyone breaks the least commandment and teaches others to, he shall be the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But those who teach God’s laws and obey them shall be great in the Kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 5:19).
As God continues to refine my life and clear out all of the things that are not of Him, I was reminded of yet another of my parents' fine practices as example.
After Sunday lunch was finished and before Sunday evening church services (Where have these gone, anyway?), they would take a nap and read the Holy Bible. This was their regular practice, each and every Sunday, and what a wonderful habit it is, in keeping with Scripture which reminds us of these things in the 4th Commandment (Exodus 20:8).
“Keep the Sabbath day holy. Don’t pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day. Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly" (Isaiah 58:13).
My daddy included this verse in his letter to the band director when I was a student at Trinity High School in Trinity, Texas back in 1982. Mr. Lewis, the band director, had decided to enter the Trinity High School band in a competition that was occurring on a Sunday, and my daddy was taking a stand for what was right. His was not a popular position, and while daddy lost the fight to keep the school out of the competition on Sunday, he won in leaving a lasting impression and setting a fine example for me.
The Blue Laws, repealed in Texas in 1985 (just 24 years after being passed), were designed to encourage and enable this most holy and important commandment of our God. Make no mistake about it—we will be judged for having allowed the pursuit of anything and everything BUT holiness on this, our Lord's day. Sadly, it's not just the 4th Commandment that we, as self-proclaimed Christians, have ignored. It is each and every one.
May God forgive us all.
I want to be a good example of someone who really follows Jesus.
Don't you?
Goodnight, Runners.
