Memorial Day
This beautiful Memorial Day poem was written by my son, Dylan Doremus.
Fallen heroes tell the tale
On this day which we regale
Memories of sacrifice
Scales on which we weigh the price
Undistinguished men were shipped
Cross Atlantic seas and stripped
Of right to family or fame
Pawns in warfare’s chessboard game
Having trained these new war vets
Generals now cast their nets
On waters of the battlefield
Some to save, others to yield
Clad in garments made of wool
Men, by men, their lives were stol’n
Slaughtered sheep, a Führer’s prey
Birthed a many hearts’ decay
So on this day, do not forget!
The bravery of those unmet
Their destinies locked in our stead
Granting us life from the dead
Let us be thankful! Celebrate!
A laid-down life, our freedom’s gate
Your soul’s great value, all to say
Upon this grand Memorial Day.
