Hybrid God

" Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." Hebrews 13:8

Nowadays people drive hybrid cars, want hybrid financing, eat hybrid vegetables, and bioengineer hybrid animals.  We have gotten so spoiled and accustomed to having our own way about things that many have even created their own hybrid god.

It's really very dangerous.  They call themselves Christians, yet they pick and choose what they find relevant and worthy of believing from the Holy Bible and simply disregard the rest.  This is prevalent not just in a few churches here and there, but in whole denominations.  These people think we should change with the times, that the Holy Bible was written so long ago that it is no longer up-to-date.

The Holy Bible tells us something different.  It says that, "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right" (2 Timothy 3:16).

Sometimes we create our own hybrid god without even realizing that we're doing it.  We read something in Scripture that seems difficult or challenging and we simply ignore it, telling ourselves, "That doesn't really apply to me.  I wouldn't have the slightest idea where or how to do that."  Other times we read something in Scripture that hits us right between the eyes and we have become so enamored with our pet sin that we find it easier to re-examine the Scripture in light of our own interpretation, which is even more dangerous.

What about you?

Are you following the God of the Holy Bible?  Or, have you created your own hybrid version?  While there may be some things in Scripture that we do not understand, we should seek God for understanding.  We should also seek to sharpen our own understanding by spending time with those who truly long to serve God with all of their heart.

Speaking of Paul's letters, Peter tells us in 2 Peter 3:16b-17, "There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.  You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability."

May we all follow the One True and Living God who was, and is, and is to come--wherever He may lead us.

Goodnight, Runners.
