Looking Under the Rug

"Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable." Hebrews 4:13

Have you ever looked under a rug that hadn't been looked under for a very long time?

It's not a pretty picture.

During the pandemic as I've found some extra time to clean up around the house, I've found dirt, crumbs, and all kinds of things under my living room rug. I haven't the slightest clue where these things came from.  It's a bit like cleaning under the sofa cushions when you have young children.

Ever been there?

My life is a bit like the living room rug, too. Oh sure, everything looks fine on the outside, even smells good--like the occasional spritz of Febreze on the couch. But underneath, there is so much dirt that it looks like someone dumped the vacuum cleaner bag. But why? Where did it all come from? I've vacuumed on it and around it every week!

But I never bothered to lift the rug and vacuum underneath.  How could anything sneak underneath, anyway?  If I can't see it, neither can anyone else, right?

Wrong.  God sees.  He sees everything always.  Hebrews 4:13 reminds us that nothing is hidden from God.  Those sins we fail to deal with and sweep under the rug . . . He sees those, too.

Listen to what the Holy Bible tells us in Jeremiah 2:21-23 about the times when we are unrepentant of our sin, "No amount of soap or lye can make you clean. I still see the stain of your guilt. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!"

I'm grateful.

God has a way of gently picking up the rug, looking where others are afraid to go (including us), and cleaning under there.  Then, He lovingly picks up each sofa cushion and cleans there, too.

Have you lifted the rug lately?  Better yet, have you allowed Jesus to lift it?

Dear Father,

We are so grateful for all that You are doing for good in and through what we've come to know as COVID-19. We are thankful that Your Word is true and never fails. Make us into all you desire us to be, leaving no rug unlifted and no cushion unturned, that we might truly be a reflection of You.

In Jesus name,

Amen.

Goodnight, Runners.
