Don't Drink the Kool-Aid
"For all nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.” Revelation 18:3
Growing up in the United States of America has been a tremendous blessing. Even growing up poor by American standards, I have never lacked any good thing throughout my life--both materially and otherwise.
But living the American dream can also be a cautionary tale.
The rich blessings we are surrounded with can desensitize us to many things, including sin, the needs of others, and it can spoil us, in the truest sense of the word.
It's a theme throughout the Book of Revelation--the warnings and cautions. We are cautioned to follow the teachings of Jesus and be rewarded both in this life and throughout eternity, and warned of the consequences for failing to do so, too.
There is nothing inherently wrong with extravagance or luxurious living, but when the pursuit of such things becomes our life's ambition, then we're on the wrong path--the path referenced in the passage of Scripture above. We're drinking the Babylonian Kool-Aid.
The 18th Chapter of Revelation outlines clearly the fate of those who get drunk on the world's way, and it ain't pretty. I encourage you to read it today.
As each day draws us closer to our forever home, may we each remember that we will one day be judged by the thoughts and intentions of our own heart and how they manifest themselves in action.
And, may we have a different mindset, determined not to drink the Kool-Aid.
