Sitting Still

“Be still and know that I am God.”  Psalm 46:10

I’ve never liked sitting still.  In the first grade I got a B in conduct because I couldn’t sit still and listen to the teacher.

After some disciplinary action from my parents and teachers, I learned to get with the program. They lovingly reminded me that there was a time to run and play, and there was a time to sit still.  And listen.

My father used to say, "Nervous, are you, Daughter?"  I was always wiggling and moving about.  My mother fed me lemon drops during church when I was little in an effort to keep me still and quiet.

But, I've learned I'm in good company.  The Israelites were consistent about one thing throughout the Holy Bible--they couldn't sit still and listen.  The prophet, Jeremiah, had a hard time sitting still, too.  Read the book of Jeremiah.  I can relate to him in so many ways.

Even though I've grown beyond that fidgety little kid, sometimes I still have trouble sitting still.  I like to be a busy bee, doing things--all sorts of things.  Sitting at my desk at work I bounce my feet, my legs, and get up to do something often.  I put multiple irons in the fire of life, hoping at least one will produce some worthy fruit for God’s Kingdom.  But even now I feel God’s loving hand of discipline urging me to get with the program.

To sit still.  And listen.

Psalm 37:7 says, "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!"

Sometimes we just need to sit still and trust that God has everything under control.

Do you need to do that?

Goodnight, Runners.
