Uncomfortable

"For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ."  2 Corinthians 1:5

Ah, comfort.  That word can mean so many different things to us, can’t it?

It can be the absence of stress, a hug or phone call from a friend saying, “It’s going to be okay.”  It can mean snuggling on the couch with a heavy blanket, a warm chocolate chip cookie, and someone we love.  It can be having a blanket at all!  Or, it can mean having the money to buy lots of blankets.  And, comfort can mean not having a care in the world.

I think we all like comfort.

Sometimes I allow myself to slip back and recall the days of my youth when my only cares were what Mom was fixing for dinner and what make-believe game my friends and I would play after school.

But, languishing in the comfort zone is not where we grow.

God has allowed me to walk through many uncomfortable things:  a public stalking, a brain tumor, a betrayal, and much, much more.  Exercising is uncomfortable!  But, I love the results!  I face things in my job every day that make me uncomfortable, like travel!  It frightens me and can be very lonely, too.  But, God has taught me how to talk to strangers, and I’ve been able to share Him with people I would never have met but for the travel.  And, speaking to groups!  I’d much rather be the wallflower than address a group of people about any subject.  But, God has taught me how to talk to a group just like I talk to Him.

I really like it now.

I’m guessing you have uncomfortable places.  And, those are the places God lovingly grows you, stretches you, teaches you.

May we never forget that Jesus was uncomfortable, too, talking to people who hated Him without cause . . . having no place on earth to call home . . . on the cross.

Read 2 Corinthians 1:5 again.  Are you uncomfortable?

Perhaps that’s right where you need to be.

Goodnight, Runners.
