The Legacy We Leave

"Honor your father and mother, that you may have a long, good life in the land the Lord your God will give you."  Exodus 20:12

Everyone has a different family.

Growing up, I had a mother who was filled to the brim with youthful exuberance and joy.  She was the one who told me I could do anything and be anything, and I had no reason to doubt her.

My father tempered my mother’s youthful exuberance and joy with the practical realities of life. He taught me to work hard and to be responsible.

Together, my mother and father were the two most imperfect, perfect parents a child could ever ask for.  I pray that my life brings honor to them. I recall all of the times they cared for me as a sick rascal, stayed up to explain why there was no need to be afraid of the moon, the boogeyman, and checked under the bed for monsters. They let me sleep in the bed with them when I had a bad dream, or my sister snatched all of the covers.  They took me on long driving vacations during which we talked about such things as where water comes from and how bees make honey. My parents taught me the value of time used wisely, caring for others, and the value of money.

But most important of all, they taught me about God.

No matter what else my parents are remembered for, the legacy they have left me is priceless. It is a legacy of loving God, fearing God, and knowing God—personally.  And, I am eternally grateful.

What legacy will you leave behind?

Goodnight, Runners.
