Follow Me Now
But Jesus told him, “Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead.” Matthew 8:22
It is a story of obedience. A man is called to be Jesus' disciple, and he tells Jesus, "First, let me return home and bury my father."
Have you ever done that? Have you told God, "In a minute, Father. Just a minute. I'm busy right now." Sadly, if I've done it once, I've done it a million times.
I was guilty of the same thing only a few times with my mother, but it was enough for her to remind me that "delayed obedience is disobedience."
But, there is more to this story that is not stated, yet implied by Jesus' response. It is implied that this wanna-be disciple's father is still living, and that perhaps he would not approve of his son chunking it all to follow Jesus. But, when his father dies, the man will be free to do as he wishes and follow Christ.
Do you have someone in your life like that? Someone who disapproves of total surrender to Jesus Christ--every day?
Scripture tells us that unless we hate father and mother by comparison to our love for Jesus that we are not fit for His kingdom (Luke 14:26). And, it also tells us that if we begin this life with Jesus and look back, as though pining for the world and all it has to offer--like Lot's wife--we are not fit for God's kingdom (Luke 9:62).
We can't have it both ways, and who would really want to? Do you truly understand all that the full, free and wonderful life of bondage to Jesus Christ has to offer? Can you grasp it?
Our story as recounted by Luke in Luke 9:60 says, "But Jesus told him, “Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead! Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God.”
We have a real call to duty, and the world is waiting.
