Step Out of the Boat

“Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. --Matthew 14:29

Are you still sitting in the boat?

Jesus is calling you to step out of the boat in faith, just like Peter.  But, perhaps you're afraid you'll end up like Peter did in the very next verse.  Scripture tells us in verse thirty, "'But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. 'Save me, Lord!' he shouted." Remember that immediately upon Peter's cry that Jesus reached out and grabbed him.

I can really relate to Peter.  I get super excited about jumping out of the boat sometimes, but then I think about what I'm doing.  It often doesn't make rational, worldly sense to leave the secure place I'm in.  It might not be a perfect place.  In fact, it might be a pretty terrible place.  But, it's familiar, and that makes me comfortable.

Or, we might be concerned about what other people think about us and how they will treat us if we step out of the boat.  Going against the establishment, or even just one solitary person we're close to, can be scary.  We know what they're going to say, how they're going to react.

But, God is bigger!  He will grab us when we call to Him.  He is there to reassure us in times of doubt.  And, the plans He has for us outside the boat are so much richer than life will ever be sitting on the inside of the boat

Is God calling you out of the boat today?

May you answer His call and step out in faith.  He'll be there to catch you if you fall.
