I Have Two Fathers

“Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?” Hebrews 12:9

I have two fathers—one earthly and one heavenly.

I am a member of two families—one earthly and one heavenly.

My earthly father, though not perfect, has provided immeasurable discipline, teaching me the value of obedience. I am a part of his bloodline, and nothing, no one can ever change that.

The Heavenly Father has shown me truth and freedom. He has taught me how to be free from the slavery of sin, and He is all things perfect. I am a part of His bloodline, too, having accepted the shed blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, as forgiveness and freedom from sin. Nothing and no one can ever change that.

Not all earthly fathers are good.

In John 8:34-38, we find Jesus’ explanation, “Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham. And yet some of you are trying to kill me because there’s no room in your hearts for my message. I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.’”

Our Heavenly Father is always good.

May we submit each day to the discipline of the Father of our spirits that we might find life—abundant and free.
