Roadblock Ahead

“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” I Corinthians 10:13

Recent heavy rains in our city prompted city officials to put up roadblocks protecting citizens from flooded roadways. The news reported one evening that, sadly, someone had driven around a roadblock only to meet their demise when the floodwaters engulfed their car, and they were unable to get out.

Some might say, “Who would be foolish enough to drive around a roadblock? Surely they saw the high water ahead!”

Yet, you and I do it every day.

God sets up roadblocks for us, to protect us from the temptations to sin that lie ahead. He gives us commandments and other rules to live by in order to protect us. Yet, just like the driver going around the roadblock, we bulldoze, drive around, and move God’s protective roadblocks out of the way so that we can sin. And, like that driver, if we don’t turn around, we will eventually meet our demise.

Ecclesiastes 8:5-6, in talking about obedience to the king says, “Those who obey him will not be punished. Those who are wise will find a time and a way to do what is right, for there is a time and a way for everything, even when a person is in trouble.”

May we be mindful of God’s protective roadblocks all around us and rest in safety.
