His Unmistakable Voice

"I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out."  John 10:1-3

Do you know someone with an unmistakable voice? I'm talking about the kind that you can pick out in a crowd - a voice that is distinguishable from any other.

My mother has that kind of voice. It is a mix of calming teddy bear and Shirley Temple, with just a dash of Bette Davis thrown in. It is a distinctive voice, and it has always been a comfort to me when I hear it. As a child, my mother was often tasked with helping at the church in the Women's Missionary Union, and I was left in the care of others across the hall in the church nursery. I spent many hours in the church nursery, but as long as I could hear my mother's voice across the hall, there was comfort. As the sound of her voice drew closer, I knew she was coming for me. The nursery worker would open up the baby gate, and I couldn't wait to run and jump into my mother's arms.

Jesus' voice is unmistakable. There is no other voice in all the world so distinctive. Do you know that voice? He leads us in right paths, staying close beside us (Psalm 23). He calls us by name. He knows us, and we are His. His voice is peace and comfort like nothing else in all the world. He opens the gate and we run to Him, our Master, our Savior, our Jesus.

Do you hear Him? He's speaking to you. Be still and quiet, and listen for His unmistakable voice.
