New Lives for Old

“Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’  Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.  Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them.  I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’” Ezekiel 37:11-14

Have you ever felt as though you wanted to give up on life completely and just end it all?

Many in the Holy Bible have felt this way.

Consider the story of Elijah as recounted in I Kings 19. Elijah had killed all the prophets of Baal, among other things, in accordance with God’s instruction. When Jezebel received word of all that Elijah had done, she sent this message to Elijah, “May the gods strike me and even kill me if by this time tomorrow I have not killed you just as you killed them.”

Elijah was terrified and fled into the wilderness. I Kings 19:4 tells us, “He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.’”

Have you ever felt like that?

That is how Israel felt in Ezekiel 37. Their hope was completely gone. But notice God’s response. It is glorious how He loves us. He brings the dead up from the grave, giving hope to the hopeless, and lifting them from the pit of despair. He gives them new lives for old.

Our Savior can work the same miracle for you if you will only let Him today.
