A Prayer for Removal of Jealousy

"Anger is cruel, and wrath is like a flood, but jealousy is even more dangerous."  Proverbs 27:4

The Bible speaks a great deal about the dangers of jealousy.  It is a destructive force in our lives that often gives way to unrealistic anger and sin.  Proverbs 14:30 says, "A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones."

Jealousy caused Joseph's brothers to throw him into a pit and sell him into slavery (Genesis 37).  Jealousy caused Sarai to send Hagar packing (Genesis 16).  Jealousy also caused King Saul to attempt to murder David again and again and again (I Samuel 18)!

Job 5:2 tells us that, "Surely resentment destroys the fool, and jealousy kills the simple."

James 3:15-16 tells us, "For jealousy and selfishness are not God's kind of wisdom.  Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.  For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind."

But God can purge this sin from our lives if we will acknowledge it before Him and ask for his divine strength.  We cannot cover it up or hide it, as James 3:14 tells us, "But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don't cover up the truth with boasting and lying."  When we confess our sin, Christ is faithful and just to forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness (I John 1:9).

Our God requires a total commitment from us.  When we are totally committed to Him, it shows.  Our lives bear much good fruit!  We don't have to be jealous, nor must we be jealousy's object.  Proverbs 12:12 says, "Thieves are jealous of each other's loot, but the godly are well rooted and bear their own fruit."

Dear Heavenly Father,

Guard our lives from jealousy.  Please purge this sin and keep it from affecting our lives in any way.  Help us to commit totally and completely in obedience to You, Lord.  Keep us in the center of Your will where there is no need and no lack of any good thing.

We thank You and praise You for Your love.  We thank You that love is patient and kind, not jealous or boastful or proud (I Corinthians 13:4).

Fill us with You, Father, and remove all unrealistic fear, causing jealousy in our lives.  Remind us of our dependence on You as our source for all things.

Keep selfish ambition far from us, Father.  In humility, we bring our weak and wounded lives before You in complete service and devotion.  Pour us out and fill us totally and completely with You so that there is no room for jealousy or any evil thing, Father.

May we cease to be the object of jealousy, and may we never be the perpetrator of a jealous heart.

It is in Your most precious name we pray.

 AMEN.
