A Prayer to Cast Out Satan and Demons

Satan and his power are real. I can tell you that from personal experience. I have seen him at work in the lives of people very close to me, attempting to thwart our efforts in obedience to Christ. I have seen him at work in my own life—tempting me away from the things I know are right, the things I know are pleasing to God.

Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

We must always be on guard against the attacks of the evil one. The best way to do this is through daily prayer, Bible reading, and fellowship with other believers. Often people are drawn away from fellowship with other believers because of perceived hypocrisy. In such cases, because of sin, their consciences have been seared as with a hot iron (I Timothy 4:2). Their consciences are no good to them anymore. Their consciences tell them that evil is good and good is evil! We must, therefore, restore and admonish one another in love, strengthening our unity in Christian brotherhood—our unity against the dark forces of this world. I Peter 5:8 tells us, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Jesus cast out devils and demons on a regular basis during his ministry on Earth. He enabled his disciples to do the same. But, there was an instance recorded in the New Testament in which a distraught father brought his son to the disciples for healing.

The father explained that his son had been possessed by a demon that caused him to have violent convulsions, grinding his teeth and foaming at the mouth. The disciples had been unable to cast out this evil spirit, so the father came and brought the boy to Jesus. Later, the disciples asked Jesus privately why they had been unable to cast out this demon. Mark 9:28-29 gives Jesus’ response, “Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, ‘Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?’ Jesus replied, ‘This kind can be cast out only by prayer.’”

We can follow Jesus’ example and pray for devils, demons and all manner of Satan’s evil influences to be cast out and removed from among or around us, and we should pray in this way as often as it is needed.

Dear Father,

Please cast the devil out of ___________________, we beg of You. We thank You and praise Your holy name for You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). We know that You are not the author of confusion, but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33).

We claim Your promise, Father, that if we resist the devil, he will flee from us (James 4:7). We thank You for giving us the power to cast out demons in Your name. Father, we rebuke Satan’s power; and, we rebuke the power of any and all evil influences over this household, this people, and this situation. Evil is not welcome here. It must be cast out into the pit of hell.

Guard our bodies, minds, hearts, souls, spirits and emotions from any and all evil influence and temptation. We thank You for making a way of escape for us in every temptation in order that we may stand firm in the way of right (1 Corinthians 10:13).

We bind Satan’s power against us. We bind his power against this household in the name of Jesus.

We thank You for allowing this situation to strengthen our faith and our trust in You and Your divine power. Help us to be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves (Matthew 10:16).

We thank You and praise You for hearing and answering our prayer.

In Jesus precious name we pray.

AMEN.

    1. Thank you for your comment. The ESV and other translations, as used above, do not add the word fasting. God sees our hearts. May God richly bless you!
