A Prayer for Unity

When we are united in Christ, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished. The Bible says, in Matthew 18:19-20, “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

That is a powerful passage of scripture. Read it again, and allow every word to soak into your soul. The importance of unity cannot be minimized. For a nation, an army, a church, a school, a family or an individual to be effective, they must be united in their vision, their focus, and their purpose in Christ.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

After Jesus ascended into heaven, there is a beautiful picture of unity among the early believers pictured in Acts 1:14, “They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.”

I love that verse. It is because of this unity in constant prayer that the body of believers grew from 120 to over 3,000 in one day at Pentecost! That is power. That is the power of prayer when we are united in Christ.

When we are in the thick of conflict and experiencing division, we can and should ask God to guide us to a place of unity in and through Him.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Search me, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts (Psalm 139:23). Show me any area of my life that is not totally devoted to You. May I be united in mind, body, and soul with Your purpose and Your will for every area of my life.

Pumice my heart and make it pliable. May I be united to this, Your body of believers.

Father, draw this entire body of believers together in unity to accomplish Your mission. Purge us of sin and selfishness. Grant us Your vision and Your focus, Father.

Lead us in Your ways.

Father, we commit ourselves to You afresh and anew. Fill us with Your love for others.  May we always show Your love to each other.

Remove all conflict far from us, Heavenly Father.

We ask these things in Your precious, holy name.

AMEN.
