A Prayer When Severely Depressed

Difficult circumstances can lead any of us to the point of depression. Consider the depression experienced by Jesus prior to His crucifixion in Matthew 26:36-38, “Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, ‘Sit here while I go over there to pray.’ He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, ‘My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’”

King David prayed in Psalm 143:7, “Come quickly, Lord, and answer me, for my depression deepens. Don’t turn away from me, or I will die.”

Job cries out to God in Job 7:16, "I hate my life and don’t want to go on living.  Oh, leave me alone for my few remaining days."

Is that the kind of depression you are facing today? Do you feel as though you could die? If so, prayer to the one true and living God can help you. Through prayer and faith in Christ, you can be brought back from severe depression and despair, experiencing the comfort that the Holy Spirit provides.

Job, David and Jesus experienced depression and despair, but each of their stories went far beyond depression and despair to victory. You can experience that same victory.

I John 5:4 reminds us, “For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.”

Dear Heavenly Father,

We draw near to You and ask for relief from this overwhelming depression we face. Come quickly to rescue us, Lord! We long for Your mercy, grace, love, and favor in our lives!

We thank You and praise You, Father, for You rescue us (Psalm 13:5)!

Remind us of Your many miracles that we may rejoice in the faith that You will again bring about miraculous works in and through our own lives.

We humbly submit to Your loving discipline in our lives, Lord.

Strengthen our faith and anticipation of the good works that are consistent with Your character.

Keep us always from the pit of despair, and guard us from depression. And, Father, may this experience bring honor and glory to Your name always.

In Your precious name, we pray.

AMEN.
