A Prayer for God's Direction and Guidance

Yogi Berra is well known for saying, “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.” We laugh, but often when we face that proverbial fork in the road, we are unsure of just which path we should take.

Psalm 32:8 tells us, “The Lord says, 'I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.'” Psalm 73:24 says, “You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.” And, Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”

Clearly in these passages and many others, God tells us that He is our guide, our map, our source for the right directions when we have lost our way or have questions.

When the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness, they were often confused and in need of direction, too, due to their lack of faith. But, in God’s infinite love for them, the Bible tells us, “The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night.”(Exodus 13:21)

If we take the time to read our Bible and spend time with God in prayer on a regular basis, we will find that God makes His direction clear to us, revealing it day by day. I love what the Bible says in Psalm 16:7, “I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me.”

Many prophets, kings, and ordinary people both inside and outside of Scripture have sought God’s guidance and direction for their lives and have found it. Listen to what Azariah said to King Asa and the people of Judah regarding the Israelites in 2 Chronicles 15:4, “But whenever they were in trouble and turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought him out, they found him.” God will do that for you, too.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We need your guidance and direction in our lives. We are confused, and we know that confusion is not of You.

Show us the path for our lives, Lord.

Teach me how to live, O Lord. Lead me along the right path, for my enemies are waiting for me (Psalm 27:11).

Make plain to us the path of life both in this situation, and all others to come. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing (Psalm 143:10).

We ask that You would open the doors You desire us to pass through, and close the doors that do not lead to Your perfect will in our lives. May we be accepting of Your will, Father, and help us to trust You with our lives at all times.

Strengthen our faith, and help our unbelief. Guard us from the lies of the Evil One.

We ask all these things in Your precious, holy name.

AMEN.
