A Prayer for Escape from Evil

Proverbs 15:3 says, “The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.” Thank God, for He sees all things.

It can be extremely nerve-racking when we are pursued by evil, even though we are innocent and desire to be obedient to God. David felt this combination of fear, anger, injustice and frustration as he was hotly pursued by Saul, the father of his best friend, Jonathan.

When we are obedient to God, He honors that obedience. The Bible says in Psalm 27:2, “When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. And, that is exactly what happened to Saul as he was overcome with evil in his attempt to destroy David. God made a way of escape from evil for David because of his obedience—because he longed to please God.

God provided David with Jonathan’s friendship, and together they worked out a plan for David’s protection (I Samuel 20). David hid in a cave awaiting Jonathan’s signal as to whether or not Saul intended to kill David. When Jonathan learned that his father’s heart was evil and intended only to kill David, he warned David by shooting arrows beyond a young boy’s reach and calling out for him to “go farther”. This told David that all was not well. So, David remained in hiding, and God made a way of escape for him.

God’s protection and goodness towards those who are obedient to Him is boundless—especially in the face of evil. Psalm 91:7 says, “Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.”

When you are surrounded by evil and feel as though there is no way of escape, God can make a way out for you, when no way out exists (I Corinthians 10:13). All we have to do is ask.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I thank You that You make a way of escape in the face of evil. Please draw me close to You, and through Your divine power, enable me to escape this evil I am facing.

I praise You for what You are teaching me through this period of crisis. I thank You for lovingly providing protection for me.

Father, I can see Your hand of protection for me, and I claim Your promise in I Corinthians 10:13 that You will make a way of escape for me in the face of evil.

Lord, help me to see the beauty of Your justice, light, and power to overcome any and all obstacles in my life—obstacles that would otherwise hinder me from accomplishing Your purposes.

Continue to keep me firmly rooted and grounded in You, in Your Word, and in fellowship with other believers.

I ask all these things in Your most holy name.

AMEN.
