A Prayer for Taming of the Tongue
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I think I must have been born with foot-in-mouth disease. More often than I care to admit, my tongue has fired at others like a bazooka at close range, inflicting widespread emotional distress. Then, conveniently failing to recall these times when others fire back.
The Bible talks a great deal about our tongues and their power. James 3:7-9 says, “People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God.”
The old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me,” isn’t true. Words can really hurt—like an atomic bomb or a missile fired at close range. In the Bible, David experienced many of these close-range missiles during his lifetime. During one of these times, he wrote, “My enemies cannot speak a truthful word. Their deepest desire is to destroy others. Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with flattery.” (Psalm 5:9)
Proverbs 13:3 tells us, “Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.”
How true! Have you ever felt as though the words you heard, either from your own mouth or that of someone else, seemed to ruin everything? I have. But, we can take it to the Lord in prayer, and He promises to help us in our time of need.
May God help us to control our tongues this week, for "out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks." Matthew 12:34
